- Attractor pattern that imitates a lot of different hatches
- Deer hair wings help this fly float well in rough water
- Best used in high mountain streams or fast water
Jack Horner originally called this fly the Horner Deer Hair Fly and developed the pattern after a deer hair winged pattern called the Tom Thumb in the 1940's. The fly got introduced to Montana fly shops sometime in the 50's and it was known as the Goofus Bug. Lefty Kreh once said the Humpy is one of the best flies to use in turbulent water when other dry flies are sinking too easily. The humpy is an attractor pattern that can be used to replicate many different hatches, especially in fast water. A fly of many names over the years that is still a good one to have in a variety of colors and especially if you plan to fish up in the mountains and in fast water where you need flies to float well and represent a lot of hatches.
