The PMD hatch comes off in June and this is one of the few times of the year that large brown trout hold in the shallow shelves, tucked in amongst waving weed beds, gently rising to a mix of PMD’s, spent caddis, and any number of clumsy terrestrials. During a strong PMD hatch the largest browns don’t care too much if it’s full sun, full clouds, raining, or whatever . . . they are there to eat.

If you haven’t read the book Trout Flies by Gary LaFontaine, “You betta ask somebody.” I recently purchased a new copy of this book off eBay (new to me) actually signed by LaFontaine. It’s signed, “For effective flies -Gary LaFontaine.”

Yes. I mean pretty much right? When Ken Morrish invented the Morrish Hopper it was new and awesome BUT… it is a foam hopper. We’re not inventing new insects so in some capacity we are mimicking something that’s already been mimicked.

But a while back, Austin, the newest member of the TFP crew showed us a fly he’d been using on the Missouri River here in Montana during one of our fly tying design sessions. He only had one, and it had obviously been used a lot and the dubbing on the back was barely intact.
