Welcome to PUERTO RICO, home to world-class Tarpon & permit angling
Fly fishing in Puerto Rico offers an exceptionally diverse saltwater venue where anglers can target premier flats and backwater species against a backdrop of rich Caribbean scenery. The island is best known for its world-class tarpon fishery, which ranges from juvenile silver kings patrolling calm mangrove lagoons to massive migratory fish over 100 pounds that feed in shallow bays and ocean inlets. Beyond tarpon, the expansive flats on the southern and western coasts—particularly around areas like Cabo Rojo and Salinas—provide technical sight-fishing opportunities for tailing permit, snook, aggressive jack crevalle, and barracuda. Because the island's coastal habitats feature a mix of sand flats, coral rubble, and sheltered channels, fly fishers can adapt their tactics daily to match varying water conditions and fish behavior. What makes Puerto Rico an appealing fly fishing destination is its year-round action combined with easy access and minimal angling pressure compared to other Caribbean hotspots. Resident tarpon populate the estuaries throughout the year, while the peak spring and summer months draw larger migratory runs. Skiff guides and local lodges accommodate anglers of all skill levels, offering everything from delicate sight-casting with crab and shrimp patterns on the flats to heavy-tackle baitfish presentations in the backwaters. When off the water, visitors can easily pair their fishing trips with the island's vibrant culture, local cuisine, and outdoor activities, making Puerto Rico an ideal mix of serious angling and a flexible tropical vacation.
