FISHING

Puerto Rico offers a unique and underrated tarpon fishery with opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. Tarpon are abundant around the island’s mangroves, typically ranging from 5–15 pounds, while larger fish from 15–80 pounds can be found on expansive flats near coastal bays. Anglers can also target tarpon around marinas and docks, where fish averaging 15–50 pounds provide exciting, obstacle-filled fights and plenty of spectator attention.

The island also boasts a strong and growing permit fishery. Reef flats, grass flats, and sandy areas offer consistent shots at 12–20-pound permit, with anglers frequently encountering tailing fish. While finding permit is relatively easy, convincing them to eat remains the challenge. For tackling these species, a 9-weight rod with a floating line is ideal, though a 10-weight setup is recommended when the wind picks up—a common companion to permit fishing.
