FISHING

Fly fishing on the Missouri is nothing short of magical. As a dam-regulated river, the “Mo” flows like a giant spring creek. Slow moving, flat, and incredibly productive. Trout here see an abundance of insects, so success often depends on downsizing tippet, along with making long drag free, precise downstream reach casts to fool rising fish.

Despite its technical nature, the Missouri is also welcoming to novice anglers. Nymphing can produce double-digit days with regularity, and catching multiple fish in the 16–18 inch range is common. The rainbow trout are exceptionally strong and often take anglers well into their backing before coming to the net. Brown trout, on the other hand, are frequently tucked tight to the banks and demand perfectly placed casts.

The Missouri also offers outstanding streamer fishing and excellent trout spey opportunities across its long, sweeping runs. Its gentle flows and straightforward navigation even allow anglers to rent and comfortably row drift boats.

Unlike many rivers, the Missouri provides extensive access, with a mix of private and public land, much of it open to walk-in fishing. First-time visitors will find it easy to explore, find water, and experience everything this remarkable fishery has to offer.

TRAVEL

Craig, Montana is a tiny fishing town with a population of around 40 full-time residents, but don’t let its size fool you. What this fly-fishing epicenter lacks in stoplights, it makes up for in river access, trout, and fly-fishing character. Nestled along the banks of the Missouri, Craig sits perfectly between a few regional airports, making it surprisingly easy to get to for such an off-the-grid feel.

WHEN TO GO

Winter (November–March)
Enjoy peaceful fishing with few anglers and if temperatures are in the 30s–50s°F productive nymphing can be had. Sow bugs, scuds, and midges, plus occasional midge dry fly action during this time.

Spring (April–June)
The Missouri's prime fishing season. Outstanding BWO, PMD, and caddis hatches provide excellent dry fly fishing, with exceptional nymphing throughout. Our busiest time of year.

Summer (July–August)
PMDs and caddis give way to tricos and hopper fishing. Dry fly opportunities remain strong as trout become more selective, offering a rewarding challenge. Nymphing becomes technical with weeds and hot conditions.

Fall (Late September–October)
Cooler weather brings excellent nymphing and returning BWO hatches. Beautiful scenery and lighter crowds make fall a favorite time to fish.

NON-ANGLING
