MISSOURI RIVER "TROUT SPEY" CAMP: CRAIG, MONTANA
Lately, spey casting for steelhead hasn't been the most uplifting topic of conversation. Numvers were so low this year, in fact, that the Deschutes and John Day rivers were closed to steelheading and bag limits, thankfully, have been reduced on the Clearwater. More than ever, it pays to get online and look at the regs carefully, before you line up that spey rod and huck.
Fortunately, there may be no better time than now to learn your trout spey game. By doing so you might give those inland steelhead a solid rest. It's not like people aren't hooking fish on the Snake, Clearwater and Ronde, but the hours invested for a single take are many.
Don't want to endure the wait? Can't keep the faith after two or three fishless days? Don't fear: you can still play the spey game and catch some large trout, some stretching past the 20-inch mark, by joining our Missouri River Spey Camp this coming March. Last year Trout Shop manager Fred Telleen hosted the camp in the trout-saturated town of Craig, Montana, right on the banks of the Missouri River, and this year casting guru and alll-around andromous fish fiend Klaus Frimor will do the same. Frimor is as entertaining as he is knowledgable on his craft, and after three days spent discussing all things spey, and spending eight long hours on the water each day, you'll walk away with a dialed-in cast, and a new-found respect for skated flies and their underestimated productivity.
Our Missouri River Spey Camps have been tremendously popular and will sell out again. We still have four open spots for Missouri River Trout Spey Camp 2027, which runs March 17-21, everything included. Four nights lodging and food at The Trout Lodge and Hub Saloon, which are located kitty corner from The Trout Shop. You also get three fully guided days on the water searching for those mega Missouri rainbows and browns. If you're looking to get dialed in on spey, and you want that tight line grab, join us for some fun, fine food, and awesome comradery. Ready to book?
