Craig Mathews Pheasant Tail X Caddis was developed with one purpose: to catch big, selectively feeding trout on Yellowstone Country’s spring creeks and rivers. During a caddis emergence, selective trout often key in exclusively on natural emerging caddis that are impaired or stillborn, with their wings and bodies trapped in their pupal shucks. In these moments, the Pheasant Tail X Caddis is unmatched. Rather than relying on standard dubbings, the tier uses pheasant tail fibers to imitate the bodies of these highly effective dry fly patterns. The frilly nature of the pheasant tail barbules traps air bubbles and produces a natural sparkle, closely mimicking the appearance of real caddis flies. The thorax, crafted from carefully blended dubbings, is designed to match the coloration of natural insects escaping their nymphal or pupal shucks. This proven pattern consistently fools some of the most selective trout in the world.
