The intentional puff of sand mimics the crab's natural defense mechanism of burying itself, an essential feature for attracting predators. Female mole crabs, larger than males and about the size of your thumb, boast a bright orange egg sac on the underside of their rounded gray bodies. This vibrant pop of orange is a visual cue for predators, such as birds and fish, signaling an easy target. To replicate this, the pattern incorporates a small tuft of bonefish pink Finnish raccoon fur to represent the egg sac.
