The Charles St. Pierre Hoh Bo Spey Fly
The Hoh Bo Spey is a legendary steelhead and salmon fly pattern designed by Northwest fly tyer Charles St. Pierre. Originally built to conquer the notoriously finicky fish of Washington's Olympic Peninsula, this sparse, articulated intruder-style pattern has earned a permanent home in the fly boxes of swing anglers worldwide.
The History & Heritage
Born on the banks of the Pacific Northwest, the fly's name pays direct homage to two of the region's most revered steelhead playgrounds: the Hoh River and the Bogachiel River ("Hoh Bo").
Its creator, Charles St. Pierre, is widely respected in the Spey casting community as a master tier and innovative angler. Before St. Pierre introduced this design, many winter steelhead flies were heavily dressed, bulky, and exhaustive to cast on a long day of swinging. St. Pierre sought to flip the script. He engineered an "all-arounder" that prioritized water displacement and natural movement over heavy mass. The result was a minimalist masterpiece that revolutionized how anglers approach cold-water steelhead.
