Skwala

This variation of a skwala is effective for a few key reasons. First, this pattern uses rubber legs, and if you've ever watched skwalas on the water in the early spring (usually March and April) they are almost always struggling and creating small ripples next to it on the water. The rubber legs help imitate that action. Secondly, the black foam on the back of the fly is actually a perfect size imitation of the egg sacks you often see when you pick up a skwala off the water and it aids in the floatability of this fly. Lastly, the 4 stations of hackle on the front of this fly, and the elk hair over the back of this pattern make it easy to see and float well. This fly does sit low, but that is what you want in a skwala pattern as the naturals are clumsy and sink in to the water column quickly.
